Manuscripten worden ontwikkeld door een genoemd wetenschappelijk team. Wie aan de vier ICMJE-criteria voldoet, staat als auteur. Schrijfondersteuning die dat niet doet, wordt vermeld in de Dankbetuigingen volgens GPP 2022.
Four ICMJE criteria
All four must be met to be listed as an author.
- Substantial contribution to design, data or interpretation
- Drafting or critical revision of intellectual content
- Approval of the version to be submitted
- Agreement to be accountable for all parts

Professional writing support that does not meet ICMJE is disclosed in the Acknowledgments: name, qualification, affiliation and funding source.
CRediT
The role matrix (conceptualization, analysis, writing, and so on) accompanies the manuscript when the contract is for a paper.
